April 19th marks National Volunteer Week! We would like to spotlight a few of our amazing volunteers who are willing to step up and serve the community remotely during a time of hardship and uncertainty for many. Be sure to check out some of these great volunteer opportunities!

Chef Wendy, Nu Skin Corporate Volunteer

Whitney - Welcome Baby

Meet Whitney Jackson, volunteer for United Way’s Welcome Baby. Each month, Whitney visits new parents to provide helpful information for the health of the new baby and self-care for the parents. She and other volunteers are now checking in with families via phone and video calls to maintain public health and CDC guidelines. Whitney has been a volunteer for 8 months and is currently studying to become a nurse.
“I love the chance I have to meet all kinds of people. The new moms and dads I have been able to meet have been so kind and fun to get to know. I also find great satisfaction when there is a problem they ask me about and I am able to use my resources to help them find a solution to their problem. The work done at Welcome Baby is truly meaningful and I am grateful to be involved in a small part of it,” says Whitney.

Thanks Whitney and all of our amazing home visitor volunteers!

Pam - VITA

Pamela Petty is a volunteer that has been with United Way’s VITA program for 14 years! She helps households file their taxes for free through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. As IRS-certified volunteers, Pam and the VITA volunteers help community members understand and maximize their income tax filing, especially through the Earned Income Tax Credit. Last year the volunteers helped bring $5 millon back to our community through tax refunds, which can be crucial income to families so they can buy groceries, pay off debts and more.

“I think VITA is important not just because we can help people save money or because the refunds generated through the VITA program bring dollars back into our communities, but because as members of the community interacting with other members of the community, we are building a coalition of people helping people. It is a feeling that we are all in this together.” says Pam.

Thanks you VITA volunteers!

Nu Skin - South Franklin Community Center

We are also grateful to our corporate volunteers, like employees at Nu Skin. Chef Wendy and others at Nu Skin are using their culinary talents to cook up something special!

“Nu Skin has always had a desire to help children. When we started to see children displaced from school due to COVID-19, we wanted to help. We responded by funding and facilitating volunteer opportunities for our employees with the South Franklin Community Center. We have worked closely with United Way to match Nu Skin employees who are willing to tutor or teach a class to the students at the Center. Our award winning restaurant, The Spoon, will be teaching the cooking class that will teach the necessary skills to cook a healthy meal at home. Our employees are excited to give back during this challenging time.” said Heather Cruz, Director of CSR Operations.

Thank you Nu Skin employees for sharing your talents with the community!

Thank you to all our amazing volunteers! We could not support the community without your help. Be sure to check out volunteer.unitedwayuc.org to find opportunities to give back.
