
Qualifications for VITA
- Your total household income must be below $49,000 including sale of stock or distributions from retirement account, including early distributions.
- If you or your spouse are self employed, you must have no employees, no inventory, no depreciation of house or vehicle, and expenses under $5,000. VITA cannot prepare taxes for self employment that had loss.
- You cannot have rental property income.
- If your only income for the year was Social Security Benefits, you are not required to file a tax return.
- VITA cannot prepare business taxes, just personal taxes.
- VITA can only prepare taxes for the current tax year. They cannot do past years or review taxes that have already been prepared by others.
- VITA volunteers are not trained in military taxes.
- VITA volunteers are not trained to prepare taxes for international students.
